  • The Super Bowl drove huge sports betting numbers, according to GeoComply
  • Nearly 725,000 new online sports betting accounts created over Super Bowl weekend
  • 14% increase in online sports betting accounts during Super Bowl weekend compared with last season

The Philadelphia Eagles absolutely drubbed the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX and the energy translated over into the sports betting markets.

According to GeoComply, a geolocation company, there was a 14% increase in active player accounts across online sportsbook customers during this Super Bowl weekend compared with Super Bowl weekend last year.

Additionally, the growth rate of online sportsbook accounts in legalized states that took action against unregulated sportsbooks this past year was twice as high compared with states that took no action.

Biggest Sports Betting Weekend of the Year

More than 14 states have taken action against illegally operating sportsbooks this past year, usually in the form of cease-and-desist letters, and those that did saw an exponentially larger increase in online sportsbook growth than states that did not.

“When states take enforcement action, we see a correlation with increased engagement on our customer’s platforms. More fans are choosing legal sportsbooks, driven by stronger consumer protections and enhanced user experiences. This means even greater tax revenues to support local communities and promote responsible growth while reducing reliance on illegal sportsbooks,” Anna Sainsbury, CEO and Co-Founder of GeoComply, said in a release.

Across all of the 38 regulated states and Washington, D.C., GeoComply reported that nearly 725,000 new online sports betting accounts were registered over Super Bowl weekend.

In the host state of Louisiana, GeoComply reported nearly 535,000 geolocation transactions from more than 60,400 active accounts. Compared with last week , Super Bowl weekend transactions were up 150% and users increased by 220%.

Biggest Moment of the Super Bowl?

GeoComply was also able to calculate the moment that saw the most sports betting activity during the Super Bowl.

The moment came just before half-time, and right after the Eagles scored their third touchdown of the game. GeoComply recorded a peak of 14,300 geolocation transactions per second for the game, the most activity the Super Bowl saw all night.

GeoComply collected active account data 12 a.m. ET on Feb. 8, 2025 through the end of the Super Bowl on Feb. 9, 2025. Geolocation transactions are recorded at various stages of a user engaging with a legal sportsbook, which includes registering an account, logging in, and placing a bet.

Additionally, the Super Bowl is known for its wide range of betting options, from traditional bets on the outcome of the game to more exotic prop bets on things like the length of the national anthem or the color of the Gatorade shower. The impact of the Super Bowl on sports betting numbers can also be seen in the way it drives interest in other sporting events.
