France Perfect in Penalties Against Portugal

France’s attack stayed ice-cold in their quarterfinal matchup with Portugal. Despite 18 attempts and five shots on target, France failed to register a goal over 90 minutes plus 30 minutes of extra time. After scoring just twice in the group stage (one penalty and one own goal courtesy Austria), France scraped past Belgium 1-0 with another own goal from Jan Vertonghen with just five minutes to play.

As cold as France has been in open play, however, they were equally hot from the penalty spot in the shootout against Portugal. Theo Hernandez capped off a string of five nearly-unstoppable kicks during France’s 5-3 victory. The only miss came from Joao Felix, who run one off the left post with Portugal’s third kick.

They have become the first team to advance to the Euro semifinals without a goal from open play.

More concerningly, star striker Kylian Mbappe had to be subbed off midway through extra time and looked considerably less than 100%.

Spain Impresses Versus Host Germany

The only team to win each of its first four games in the tournament, Spain continued to look like the team to beat during an extra-time win over host Germany.

Spain was the more-threatening team in the first half and were finally rewarded with a goal from Dani Olmo early in the second half. Florian Wirtz was able to draw Germany level at the tail end of the second half, a deserving reward for Germany’s concerted push over the final 30 minutes. But with the score back to level, Spain again had the better of play in the extra time and saw substitute Mikel Merino pot the winner in the 119th minute.

Spain’s defense will be decimated in the semifinals. Both Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal received cards that will leave them suspended for Tuesday’s match.

Barring injuries, France will have its full complement of players.

In five head-to-head meetings since 2012, France and Spain are both 2-1-2 against each other. France won the last meeting (2-1) during the 2021 UEFA Nations League.
