The Boilermakers absolutely pounded the Wolverines when the teams met in West Lafayette just three weeks ago, emerging with a 91-64 victory. The game was all but over from the opening tip as Purdue started on a 13-2 run and also had runs of 15-2 and 12-2 in the first half, taking an insurmountable 51-26 lead into halftime.
Braden Smith had a game-high 24 points in the win despite going 0-of-4 from three. Vladislav Goldin had a team-high 14 points for the Wolverines.
Michigan has been a completely different team at home (11-0 straight-up) compared to elsewhere (7-5 SU). That includes a 5-0 home record in Big Ten play, beating Iowa (85-83), Washington (91-75), Northwestern (80-76), Penn State (76-72), and most-recently Oregon (80-76).
The Wolverines also enter Tuesday on a four-game overall win streak, same as Purdue, winning four straight since the beatdown by the Boilermakers on Jan. 24.
It’s not just location that has me leaning Wolverines. On paper, I also like the way they matchup with Purdue. If the Boilermakers have a weakness, it’s on the glass. They rank just 159th in DI in OR% and 192nd in DR%. Michigan is a rock-solid 69th on the offensive glass and just happens to have two quality seven-footers (Goldin and Danny Wolf) to rotate.
If Michigan continues to play solid perimeter defense – they currently rank 26th in the nation defensively in Effective FG% (46.4%) and 38th in three-point defense (30.8%) – they should be able to clean up the glass and dominate the paint at the other end.
Michigan is currently fifth out of all 364 Division I teams in 2PT% on offense (59.5%) while Purdue is an abysmal 284th in 2PT defense (53.9%).
PUR vs MICH Player Props
Standout junior Trey Kaufman-Renn (18.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.4 APG), who is doing an admirable job trying to fill the massive shoes left by two-time national player of the year Zach Edey, has the highest point total of the night at 18.9 PPG. He’s followed by teammate Braden Smith (16.1 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 8.8 APG) and Michigan center Vlad Goldin (15.7 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 1.3 APG), both at 17.5 O/U.
Smith is currently the third-favorite in the Wooden Award odds but at a distant +5000. Duke’s Cooper Flagg (-300) and Auburn’s Johni Broome (+200) have turned that betting market into a two-horse race.
Purdue vs Michigan Odds
There is still a little variety on the board in the Purdue vs Michigan odds as of 12:30 pm ET. Most sportsbooks have the spread at Michigan -2.5 but Caesars listed it half a point lower, making it the best ATS option for Michigan bettors. The best odds on Purdue +2.5 are -110 at FanDuel.
Counterintuitively, while Caesars has the smallest spread, it also has the longest moneyline on Purdue at +118. The best moneyline on the Wolverines is -135 at both bet365 and ESPN Bet.
The game total ranges from 151.5 to 152.0. BetMGM, FanDuel, ESPN Bet, and DraftKings all have the total at 151.5 (O -115/U -105). BetMGM and bet365 have it at 152.o (O -105/U -115).
The college basketball public betting splits show the public almost evenly divided on this game. Michigan is getting 64% of ATS handle on just 40% of ATS bets. However, the Boilermakers are getting 60% of moneyline (on just 40% of ML wagers).
The public’s biggest lean is on the game total, where 70% of money has been bet on the over so far, which has actually pushed it up from as low as 150.5.
Purdue’s 11-2 start to Big Ten play has vaulted the Boilermakers to eighth-favorite in the March Madness championship odds at +2800. Michigan is tied for the 17th-best odds at +5000.
