You’re going to want to opt for an extra cup of coffee on Friday afternoon. That’s because there’s a marquee college football game kicking off late, that you won’t want to miss.

#16 Utah (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) travels to Arizona State (4-1, 1-1 Big 12), to face a Sun Devils squad that is exceeding all expectations so far. Arizona State is off to a 4-1 start and can put a serious dent in the Utes playoff hopes with an upset victory. Online sportsbooks aren’t quite believing the Arizona State hype, however, as they listed Utah as the chalk in the College Football odds.

Rising Status Still Up in the Air

The big question heading into this Big 12 showdown is will Cam Rising play? The Utes star QB is a true game-time decision, and hasn’t played in a month since suffering a hand injury versus Baylor. Rising, a seven-year veteran, remains a name on the Heisman Trophy odds board, but his price keeps getting longer with every game he misses.

The seven-year man was off to a scorching hot start, throwing 7 TD in less than two full games. He missed all of 2023 with a knee injury, and was the main reason Utah was considered a serious threat in the College Football Playoff odds.

Cam Rising vs Isaac Wilson Passing Stats

2-0 Record 2-1
62.1 CMP % 55.7
342 YDS 830
7 TD 6
0 INT 7

Utah is 2-1 in three contests without Rising, beating Utah State and squeaking by Oklahoma State, before losing last time out to Arizona. Isaac Wilson has started in Rising’s place, but the drop-off in production has been significant. Wilson has thrown more interceptions (7) than touchdowns (6), and is completing only 56% of his throws.

He’s been especially bad under pressure, completing only 37% of his passes, with 3 interceptions and zero touchdowns. That’s music to the Sun Devils ears, who have been improving as a pass rush, and defend the pass quite well.

Utah vs Arizona State Prediction

Not much was expected out of Arizona State this season. Their win total was 4.5, with the under heavily juiced. They’re one victory from exceeding that, with their only loss coming to a very good Texas Tech squad. Speaking of the Aggies, they waxed Arizona, the team that just knocked off the Utes.

The Sun Devils offense has been the biggest surprise, as they’re averaging over 30 points per contest. They’re second in the Big 12 in time of possession, and have an excellent run game. Cam Skattebo ranks second in the conference in rushing, and headlines a ground attack that’s averaging 218 yards per game.

Arizona State has a better explosive play percentage than Utah, with a significantly better rushing success rate and a similar passing success mark. The Utes do possess a strong rush defense, but there are reasons to believe the Sun Devils will still be efficient running the ball.

For starters, it’s going to be hot on Friday, very hot. Temperatures will still be in the high 90’s at kickoff, and that can wear down a defense that’s not accustom to the heat. Utah surrendered 161 rushing yards to the Wildcats last time out, and that run game is inferior to Arizona State’s.

On the other side of the ball, it will be a grind for Utah is Rising doesn’t play, but even if he does, there could be some rust. If it’s Wilson, efficiency will be low and the Utes won’t find much success on the ground. The Sun Devils are yielding only 96 rushing yards per game, at a rate of 3.0 yards per carry.

In what is shaping up to be an exciting matchup, the Utah Utes will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in Friday night college football action. Both teams are coming off impressive wins and will be looking to continue their momentum in this crucial conference showdown.

The Utah Utes are currently 4-1 on the season and are coming off a dominant 52-7 victory over Oregon State. Led by quarterback Charlie Brewer, who has thrown for 1,243 yards and 7 touchdowns so far this season, the Utes offense has been firing on all cylinders. Running back Tavion Thomas has also been a force to be reckoned with, rushing for 410 yards and 8 touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Utah has been equally impressive, holding opponents to just 17.6 points per game. Linebacker Devin Lloyd has been a standout player for the Utes, recording 41 tackles and 3 interceptions on the season.

On the other side of the field, the Arizona State Sun Devils are also off to a strong start with a 4-1 record. They are coming off a thrilling 35-13 win over UCLA and will be looking to build on that success against Utah. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has been a key player for the Sun Devils, throwing for 1,077 yards and 7 touchdowns this season. Running back Rachaad White has also been a standout performer, rushing for 381 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Defensively, Arizona State has been solid, allowing just 20.2 points per game. Linebacker Darien Butler has been a force to be reckoned with, recording 38 tackles and 2 interceptions on the season.

As for the odds, Utah is currently favored to win this matchup with a spread of -3.5 points. The over/under is set at 51.5 points, indicating that oddsmakers are expecting a relatively low-scoring game.

In terms of predictions, this game has all the makings of a close and competitive matchup. Both teams have strong offenses and defenses, making it difficult to predict a clear winner. However, Utah’s recent dominance on both sides of the ball gives them a slight edge in this contest.

Overall, fans can expect an exciting game between two talented teams on Friday night. With both Utah and Arizona State looking to make a statement in conference play, this matchup is sure to be one to watch.
