The top-ranked, top-seeded Tennessee Volunteers (57-12) can book their ticket to the 2024 College World Series final with a win on Wednesday afternoon against the Florida State Seminoles (49-16), who kept their season alive with a 9-5 victory over North Carolina on Tuesday.

The Seminoles, who are now 1-2 in the double-elimination bracket, have to win two in a row to knock out Tennessee, which is 2-0 thanks to a thrilling 12-11 comeback win over FSU on Friday and a 6-1 win over UNC on Sunday.

The Volunteers, who have won 11 of their last 12 games, head into Wednesday’s matchup as a sizable favorite in the Tennessee vs Florida State odds.

The first matchup between these teams on Friday was one for the ages. Tennessee built a 4-1 lead after two innings only two see FSU take a 9-4 lead by the end of four. Tennessee showed its championship mettle late in the game, overcoming an 11-7 deficit with one in the eighth and four in the bottom of the ninth (on three singles and a sac fly).

Tennessee is currently the -130 favorite to win the national championship, which would be its first in program history. (Their previous best finish was runner-up in 1951.) Florida State’s odds improved from +2200 to +1000 after they knocked out UNC on Tuesday. The Noles have finished runner-up three times (1970, 1986, 1999) but have also never claimed the national title.

Tennessee vs Florida State Starting Pitchers

Tennessee rolls with its number-two starter on Wednesday, 6’2 lefty Zander Sechrist.

Sechrist’s numbers have dipped slightly compared to last season, when he had a lights-out 2.05 ERA, but his ERA remains a rock-solid 3.26, and he more than doubled his innings pitched from last year (62.2 vs 30.0). He was excellent in his last start, giving up just one run on six hits and no walks over 6.1 innings in a must-win game against Evansville in the Super Regional.

Florida State hasn’t announced its starter, but their number-one, Jamie Arnold, hasn’t pitched since the tournament-opening loss to Tennessee, when he allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks over 5.0 innings.

On the whole, Arnold has been exceptional this season, with a 2.98 ERA and 1.098 while eating a massive 105.2 innings for the Noles.

Zander Sechrist vs Jamie Arnold

4-1 Record 11-3
66.1 IP 105.2
3.26 ERA 2.98
1.191 WHIP 1.098
9.0 K/9 13.5
4.71-to-1 K-to-BB Ratio 6.12-to-1

Tennessee vs Florida State Prediction

Tennessee’s march to the College World Series finals feels inevitable, and having Sechrist on the mound should give Vols faithful a lot of confidence. When FSU tagged Tennessee for 11 runs in the tournament opener, neither of the Volunteers top-two starters were available.

The way Tennessee battered Arnold, FSU’s top starter, on Friday is a microcosm of their season: it really doesn’t matter who the opponents has on the mound, the Volunteers’ electric offense can put up runs in a hurry. Arnold finished his five-inning outing with a 2.40 WHIP.

Predictions:
Tennessee comes into this game as the higher-ranked team, sitting at number three in the nation. They have a strong lineup and solid pitching staff that has carried them to this point in the tournament. Florida State, on the other hand, has been a bit of a surprise, but they have shown they can compete with some of the best teams in the country. This game is expected to be a close one, with both teams fighting for a spot in the next round.

Odds:
The odds for this game are relatively even, with Tennessee being slight favorites. The Volunteers are currently sitting at -120, while Florida State is at +110. The odds reflect the tight matchup between these two teams and indicate that this game could go either way.

Picks:
In a game as close as this one, it’s tough to pick a clear winner. However, based on their strong season and higher ranking, Tennessee seems like the safer bet. Their pitching staff has been dominant all year, and they have a lineup that can put up runs in a hurry. Look for Tennessee to come out on top in a hard-fought battle against Florida State.

Probable Pitchers:
For Tennessee, the probable pitcher for this game is expected to be their ace, Chad Dallas. Dallas has been lights out all season, boasting an impressive 2.42 ERA and 10-1 record. He will be a tough matchup for Florida State’s hitters and will look to shut them down early.

On the other side, Florida State is likely to start Conor Grady on the mound. Grady has been solid for the Seminoles this season, with a 3.94 ERA and a 9-3 record. He will need to bring his A-game against Tennessee’s potent lineup if Florida State hopes to come out on top.
