The Los Angeles Dodgers host the Arizona Diamondbacks for an NL West showdown Tuesday night at 10:10 p.m. ET. The series has been tight so far this season, sitting at 3-3 apiece with the Diamondbacks having won the most recent series in 2 games.

This matchup pits one of the best offenses in the game, the Dodgers, against one of the best fielding teams, the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers are elite at just about everything though, sitting top 5 in ERA, home runs, hits, batting average and… well, you get the picture.

The Diamondbacks are no slouch when they get to the plate, either. Lead by Ketel Marte and Christian Walker, Arizona has the 9th best batting average in Major League Baseball with a .321 On-Base percentage.

Ryne Nelson vs Bobby Miller

5-6 Record 1-1
5.69 ERA 6.75
5.17 xERA 5.89
1.57 WHIP 1.65
68.0 IP 20.0

Tonight’s pitching matchup pits Los Angeles’ Bobby Miller against Arizona’s Ryne Nelson, 2 pitchers with underwhelming expected metrics that have struggled in recent outings.

Miller is making his 3rd start after a return from the IL and struggled heavily in both of them – especially last Tuesday against the White Sox where he pitched just a pair of innings with 3 earned runs allowed and 4 hits. Miller does not throw a lot of strikeouts and the Diamondbacks will be able to get to him early with their strong ability to get on base.

Nelson is coming off what was one of his worst starts of the season Wednesday against Minnesota where he allowed 6 earned runs and 10 hits in just 3.2 innings of work, earning the loss in the process.

There is a silver lining for Nelson though. He performed well against the Dodgers’ strong lineup last time up, allowing 5 hits and 0 earned runs through 5 innings in a 6-0 win over Los Angeles back in May. The Dodgers are also hitting just .143 all-time against Nelson, who is 2-0 against Los Angeles.

The Dodgers lineup may have the advantage heading into Round 2 against Nelson tonight in front of a home crowd, but he’s shown he has the ability to succeed in this exact spot before.

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Prediction (July 2)

Arizona has shown they aren’t scared of Dodger stadium already this season, and Nelson is slightly easier to trust on the mound (I expect him to have a bounce back game after a horrendous performance against the Twins.)

The Diamondbacks hit .243 against Miller last year during his strong debut showing in Major League Baseball. With Miller really struggling since returning from IL, there should be cause for concern among Dodgers fans.

I don’t hate the Diamondbacks to win this one outright, but I admit that the Dodgers’ dangerous lineup is unlikely to whiff against Nelson a 2nd time around this season.

LAD vs. ARI Pick: ARI +1.5 (-125)
