The Buffalo Sabres (25-32-6) head to the Motor City for a date with the Detroit Red Wings (30-28-6) in an Atlantic Division showdown on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The puck is set to drop at 7:30 PM Eastern Time, with the matchup being broadcast nationally on TNT.
The Red Wings hit the ice as -160 home favorites, with the total (over/under) pinned at 6.5 goals. Can Dylan Larkin and company snap out of their six-game funk and defend their barn against the inconsistent Sabres?
We’ve got you covered with our Sabres vs Red Wings prediction for Wednesday Night Hockey.
Sabres vs Red Wings Prediction
I’m riding with the Red Wings to break out of their slump and get a much-needed W against the Sabres. Sure, Detroit’s mired in a six-game slide, but they’ve been money at Little Caesars Arena this year, piling up 18 wins on home ice.
A deeper dive into the advanced stats suggests the Red Wings are poised for a turnaround. Over their last 10 tilts, Detroit has majorly underachieved compared to their expected goal total (14 actual vs 25.84 expected) despite flexing some serious possession muscle (51.86 CF%, 53.39 FF%, 54.97 SF%). Tack on an unsustainably low PDO of 0.943, and it’s clear the hockey gods haven’t been kind to the Red Wings lately.
As for Buffalo, their road woes are legit – the Sabres have stumbled to a 9-18 record away from home. Even worse, their defense has been brutal in enemy territory, coughing up a whopping 3.48 goals per game (30th in the NHL). And while Buffalo’s offense can bring the firepower (12th in goals scored), it’s been hit-or-miss on the road.
The Sabres just got a huge win over Edmonton, which is fresh in the minds of bettors. However, it’s important to note that Buffalo had dropped five straight games before halting the skid. Furthermore, Lindy Ruff’s club has managed only one victory in their past five contests against Detroit.
Count on the Red Wings to come out swinging in front of an amped-up home crowd. Buffalo’s road struggles play right into Detroit’s hands here. I’m banking on offensive studs like Dylan Larkin (56 points) and Lucas Raymond (66 points) to feast on the Sabres’ flimsy defense and power the Red Wings to a statement victory.
Wednesday Hockey Pick:
- Red Wings ML (-160 at Caesars)
Sabres vs Red Wings Odds
The oddsmakers have tabbed the Red Wings as solid -160 home favorites. In other words, you’d need to lay down $160 on Detroit to win a Benjamin if they get the job done. The Sabres are +135 road dogs, meaning a $100 dart on Buffalo would net you $135 if they pull off the upset.
Feeling risky? The Red Wings are sitting at -1.5 (+162) on the puck line. You’d cash that ticket if Detroit wins by 2+ goals, and the payout ain’t too shabby. Buffalo backers can snag +1.5 (-195) on the puck line, which hits if the Sabres win outright or keep it within a goal.
The total for this tilt is hovering at 6.5 goals, with the over slightly juiced at -105 and the under at -115. The bookies seem to be hinting at a slightly higher-scoring affair.

Looking for some Red Wings vs Sabres player props? With this game featuring one of the highest totals in the Wednesday NHL odds, I’m looking no further than the anytime goalscorer market.
Combine the following two player props bets with the Red Wings ML into an NHL same-game parlay to maximize your value on this game.
Dylan Larkin – Anytime Goalscorer (+135)
Larkin’s leading the Red Wings’ lamp-lighting charge with 27 goals on the season, including tallies in three straight contests. He’ll be licking his chops facing a Sabres D that’s serving up 3.48 goals per game (30th in the NHL).
In these big playoff-atmosphere-type games with huge stakes, you don’t need to overthink it. Larkin comes through in big moments and has fired five shots on goal in each prior meeting with Bufflao this season. He offers great value to fine twine at +135 odds.
Tage Thompson – Anytime Goalscorer (+170)
Thompson’s got a team-high 33 goals for the Sabres this year, including five ginos in his past five outings. The Red Wings may be dominant at home, but their overall defensive stats (3.19 goals against per game) make me think Thompson will have plenty of premium chances to bury one.
In a game that will likely feature plenty of offensive fireworks, you can’t go wrong betting Tage. Just like Larkin, he comes to play in this rivalry. In his first meeting with the Wings this season, Thompson put the team on his back with two goals and six shots.

The Buffalo Sabres will face off against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, March 12th in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are looking to secure a win and improve their standings in the league.
The Sabres are currently sitting in sixth place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 28-29-8. They have been struggling as of late, losing their last three games. However, they have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and have the potential to come out on top in this game.
The Red Wings, on the other hand, are in last place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 15-46-4. They have had a tough season and are looking to turn things around. Despite their record, they have been playing with heart and determination and could surprise the Sabres with a strong performance.
In terms of predictions, the Sabres are favored to win this game. They have a more experienced roster and have shown that they can compete with some of the top teams in the league. However, the Red Wings should not be counted out. They have nothing to lose and could come out swinging, looking to play spoiler to the Sabres.
As for player props, keep an eye on Sabres forward Jack Eichel. He has been a standout player for Buffalo this season, leading the team in points and goals. He will be looking to make an impact in this game and could be a key player in securing a win for the Sabres.
On the Red Wings side, watch for forward Dylan Larkin. He has been a bright spot for Detroit this season, leading the team in points and assists. He will be looking to continue his strong play and help lead the Red Wings to a victory.
Overall, this game has the potential to be a close and competitive matchup. Both teams will be looking to come out on top and secure a much-needed win. It will be interesting to see how things unfold on Wednesday night.
