Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will step into the ring against Chinese contender Zhilei Zhang in a highly anticipated clash of knockout artists. The bout headlines the Queensberry vs Matchroom 5v5 event at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The undercard features several intriguing matchups, including a light heavyweight title defense by Dmitry Bivol against Malik Zinad and a featherweight title showdown between Ray Ford and Nick Ball. But all eyes will be on the main event, as Wilder and Zhang look to prove they still have plenty left in the tank.

Let’s dive into our Deontay Wilder vs Zhilei Zhang prediction for Saturday as analyze the tale of the tape.

Wilder vs Zhang Odds

Fighter Odds
Deontay Wilder +120
Zhilei Zhang -150

The oddsmakers have installed Zhang as a moderate -150 favorite, with Wilder coming back at +120 underdog odds. This means you would need to wager $150 on Zhang to win $100, while a $100 bet on Wilder would return $120 in profit if he pulls off the upset.

The implied probability of Zhang winning the fight based on the boxing odds is 60%, while the implied win probability for Wilder is 46%. There is evidently no heavy favorite in this one.

The over/under for the total rounds is set at 6.5, with the under slightly favored at -125. This indicates that the bookies expect a stoppage before the midway point of the scheduled 12-round fight.

Wilder Betting Analysis

Deontay Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs) is a former longtime WBC heavyweight champion known for his freakish one-punch knockout power. The 6’7″ Alabama native has scored knockouts in all but two of his 43 career wins.

However, the 38-year-old Wilder is just 1-3 in his last four fights and looked like a shell of his former self in a wide decision loss to Joseph Parker in December.

YouTube video

Wilder’s biggest strength is undoubtedly his thunderous right hand, which has ended many fights in an instant. When he’s able to set his feet and unload his power shots, few heavyweights can withstand them. However, his technical boxing skills are limited and he struggles when forced to fight off the back foot.

To win this fight, Wilder will need to gain Zhang’s respect early with his power and keep the hard-hitting Chinese fighter at the end of his jab. If he allows Zhang to pressure him and force him backwards, it could be a long (or short) night for the aging American.

Zhang Betting Analysis

Zhilei Zhang (26-2-1, 21 KOs) is a 6’6″ southpaw from China with heavy hands of his own. The 41-year-old scored two knockdowns in a competitive majority decision loss to Joseph Parker in March. Prior to that, “Big Bang” Zhang scored back-to-back knockouts over the previously undefeated Joe Joyce in 2023.

YouTube video

Zhang is a patient, methodical fighter who looks to cut off the ring and unload power shots when in range. He’s an accurate puncher with good fundamentals and a solid chin. However, his advanced age and conditioning are question marks, as he faded down the stretch against Parker.

Zhang’s keys to victory will be pressuring Wilder, making him uncomfortable, and landing his big left hand. If he can force Wilder to fight going backwards and test his questionable stamina, Zhang has an excellent chance of scoring the stoppage.

Tale of the Tape

43-3-1 Record 26-2-1
42 Knockouts 21
6’7″ (201 cm) Height 6’6″ (198 cm)
83″ (211 cm) Reach 80″ (203 cm)
Orthodox Stance Southpaw

Wilder vs Zhang Prediction

This is a true crossroads fight between two aging heavyweights looking for one more title run. Wilder’s power gives him a puncher’s chance, but I believe we’ve already seen the best of the Bronze Bomber. He looked gun-shy and unable to pull the trigger against Parker, and Zhang has the style to give him fits.

I’m picking Zhang to wear Wilder down and score a late stoppage, likely between rounds 7-12 at +380 odds. Wilder’s tendency to stay on the back foot and lack of head movement will be his undoing against a heavy-handed pressure fighter like Zhang. This could sadly be the end of the road for the former long-reigning champion.

For my official plays, I’ll take Zhang to win by KO/TKO at +185 odds. I also like Zhang to win in rounds 7-112 at +380 if you believe he will stop Wilder in the later rounds as he begins to tire. Hopefully we get an exciting fight for however long it lasts.

Saturday Boxing Picks:

  • Zhang by KO/TKO (+100)
  • Zhang in Rounds 7-12 (+380)
