After a dominant 6-2 win last time out, the Dallas Stars have a chance to send the Colorado Avalanche packing in back-to-back playoffs, if they can pick up a win in Game 6 in Round 1 of the NHL playoff bracket.

In a series with such powerhouses meeting this early in the postseason, the books think there’s more in store, with the books having the Avs as the betting favorite Thursday night.

Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 pm ET at Ball Arena, in Denver, CO, with TBS providing the broadcast coverage.

Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche Odds

The Avs are a -178 moneyline favorite in the NHL odds, with Dallas tabbed as the +150 underdog to close out the series. The total sits at six goals. That exact total is 2-2-1 through five games in this series.

Colorado’s Offense Inconsistent

Perhaps with a little more puck luck, the Avalanche could be the ones in pole position in this series. Alas, a pair of OT losses and an offense that can’t consistently put up goals has them on the brink.

It hasn’t been for a lack of effort: Colorado is averaging better than 33 shots per game in this series, which ranks third in the playoffs, but are averaging just three goals per game.

Their power play, which ranked eighth in the regular season and scored at nearly a 25% success rate, is converting on just 17.7% of its chances, which is Bottom 4 in the postseason.

Those struggles collided with a blow up from goalie Mackenzie Blackwood. Through four games, he was tops in the postseason in save percentage and second in goals against.

Then Game 5 happened. After giving up five goals on 13 shots, those numbers plummeted to ninth in save percentage and eighth in GAA

Stars Relying on Balance

Dallas hasn’t exactly rolled in this series — as they’ve only led for 61 total minutes through five games.

However, Game 5 offered a glimpse of what the third-highest scoring team in the NHL could do, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and then putting it in to overdrive with three more, to win going away.

There’s no dominant guy carrying the weight: Dallas has four players with two goals and 16 different skaters registering at least one point.

Another encouraging sign for the Stars is Mikko Rantanen finally potting his first of the series agains the team that traded him.

Wyatt Johnston, who had 33 goals in the regular season, and Mason Marchment, who had 22, both lit the lamp for the first time these playoffs in Game 5.

Stars vs Avalanche Prediction

  • Over 6.0 goals (+100 at Caesars)

If the Avs do want to push this to a winner-take-all Game 7, it’s looking like they’re going to have to match the Stars’ offense, which is starting to pick up its stride.

Colorado has been a more consistent scorer at home against Dallas, having scored at least four goals in three of the last four games vs the Stars, including once in this series.

Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger also got roughed up in his last start in Denver, getting pulled after allowing three goals on 34 shots, part of a 4-0 loss in Game 4.

The Over has cashed in six of the last 10 meetings between these clubs, and we should be in for a high-octane battle with so much on the line Thursday night.
