Kentucky was equally impressive in its first and second-round games. The Wildcats put away #14 Troy early, taking an eight-point lead into halftime and stretching it to 19 by the end of 40 minutes. Otega Oweh scored a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
The Troy win was one of the better defensive performances of the season by Mark Pope’s team of transfers, holding the Trojans to just 35% shooting from the field. In the second round, an offensive explosion led Kentucky to an 84-75 win over #6 Illinois as 2.5-point underdogs.
After scoring zero points in 25 minutes in his first game back from injury against Troy, point guard Lamont Butler looked much better against the Illini, finishing with 14 points, five assists, and two rebounds in 32 minutes. In the home win, Otega Oweh and Ansley Almonorled UK with just 13 points apiece.
