Through 36 holes at The Masters Tournament, Justin Rose leads the pack after shooting a second round 71. There are plenty of major champions lurking, with two-time US Open champ Bryson DeChambeau one stroke behind, Rory McIlroy, in search of the career grand slam two back, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is three adrift.

With so many luminaries in contention, finding value in the outright winner market is a little bit tricky. The top-four players with the shortest odds to win the 89th Masters have all tasted major glory in their respective careers. I’m going to select four golfers who could make a charge on moving day Saturday to position themselves to win Sunday evening.

Despite trailing, Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy are the slight favorites at +330 in the 2025 Masters odds. However, the boogie man Scottie Scheffler looms at +360, as he’s three back. He’s attempting to become just the second player ever (Jack Nicklaus) to win three green jackets in a four-year span.

Shane Lowry Searching For Second Career Major

Against this stacked leaderboard, I very much like looking at mostly all previous major winners, given the quality of talent competing over the last two days. There’s no other way to slice it, there’s a strong chance the winner will come out of the DeChambeau/McIlroy/Scheffler trio. However, if they falter, Shane Lowry has been trending for quite a while and is destined to add to his trophy collection.

The 2019 Open champion is just three off the pace, and he’s been playing inspired golf for quite a while. In his last 15 worldwide starts, the affable Irishman has racked up 13 top-20s, including twelve top-15s.

He also was strong at two majors in 2024, posting sixth place results. The last 24 rounds on tour, he’s fifth in strokes gained: tee-to-green, and sixth in total strokes gained. He doesn’t win enough for my liking, but it feels inevitable if the putter gets hot, he’s going to pick off another big tournament soon enough.

Can Viktor Hovland Capture His First Major?

I’ll select one player to emerge with his first career major triumph, and that’s Viktor Hovland, who was victorious in his most recent start at the Valspar Championship. He begins Saturday four behind Rose after rounds of 71 and 69. Had it not been for two disappointing closing bogeys, he’d have been right in the hunt, but he’s still not out of this movie.

Prior to his victory at the Valspar, he’d missed three straight cuts as he tinkered with his swing. The 2023 FedEx Cup champion is just the kind of thinking man that should do well at Augusta National each year.

In his last nine majors, he’s been a very feast or famine player – four top-7s and six top-15s to go along with three missed cuts. Now that he finds himself squarely in the mix, can he bust through? Realistically, it might be a stretch, but at +2800, I love the odds. Without question, he’s the type of golfer that should win multiple majors in his career.

1. Hideki Matsuyama +4500: You’ll notice a theme in these two selections, in that they’re both previous Masters winners. Hideki Matsuyama’s number is +4500, yet he’s just five behind. He won this tournament in 2021, which was his third career top-10 at the Masters. The last two seasons on tour, he’s racked up three wins in huge events – one was the FedEx St. Jude Championship playoff tourney, the other two were signature events (Genesis Invitational, The Sentry). The eleven-time PGA Tour champ is tenth in third-round scoring average, so he could shoot up the board. He’s hit a whopping 31 of 36 greens through two days.
2. Patrick Reed +8000: Considering he sits just five off the lead, Patrick Reed sports an incredible +8000 number to win his second career green jacket. I love banking on past champions who know what it takes to close the deal at Augusta National. Not only does he have the victory in 2018, but also has racked up four top-12s at this venue in the last five years. Reed has hit 25 of 28 fairways which indicates he should be able to give himself plenty of chances to have quality approach shots, which lead to birdies. He’s also gained 3.6 shots around the green this week, second in the field (DeChambeau).

As the 2025 Masters Tournament enters its weekend rounds, golf fans and bettors alike are looking for the best longshot and sleeper bets to make for the remainder of the tournament.
