The first batch of North Carolina sports betting licenses have been awarded.
The North Carolina Lottery Commission announced today that it has awarded its first seven sports betting operator licenses. Each operator can begin registering new players tomorrow in the state.
Each of the operators will be eligible to launch online sports betting in the Tar Heel State on Monday, March 11.
A Historic Moment for North Carolina
The North Carolina Lottery Commission awarded licenses to the following operators and their partners:
As part of the requirements for a license, each operator had to partner with either a North Carolina sports franchise, arena, or PGA Tour golf course.
Neither the Catawba Two Kings Casino or Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise Cherokee were awarded licenses in this first batch of approvals. However, the Lottery Commission said it will likely approve additional licenses at a later date.
Caesars Sportsbook, which has partnered with Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise Cherokee, was approved as a service provider in the state. It’s unknown if they will be allowed to begin pre-registering users tomorrow since their tribal partner has yet to be awarded a license.
Each of the licensed operators are expected to be ready on Monday, March 11, at noon when North Carolina launches online sports betting. It’s good timing for the state, as the NCAA will tip off its March Madness basketball tournament on Tuesday, March 19.
“Issuing the first interactive sports wagering operator licenses today represents a major milestone in establishing legal sports betting in North Carolina,” said Ripley Rand, chair of the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, in a release. “North Carolinians can begin signing up for accounts on their mobile devices on Friday with the confidence they will soon be able to make wagers on their favorite sporting events securely and responsibly. We’re just 11 days away from the start of sports betting in North Carolina and we will be working every day between now and then to see that our launch is a successful one.”

The state of North Carolina has recently made history by awarding its first licenses for sports betting. This marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to legalize and regulate this popular form of gambling.
The North Carolina Education Lottery, which oversees sports betting in the state, announced that it has granted licenses to two companies: DraftKings and FanDuel. These two well-known sports betting operators will now be able to offer their services to residents of North Carolina, allowing them to place bets on a wide range of sporting events.
This development comes after the state passed legislation in 2019 that allowed for the legalization of sports betting. Since then, the North Carolina Education Lottery has been working diligently to establish a framework for regulating the industry and issuing licenses to qualified operators.
The decision to award licenses to DraftKings and FanDuel is seen as a positive step forward for the state, as both companies have a proven track record of operating successful sports betting platforms in other states. This move is expected to generate significant revenue for North Carolina, as well as create new job opportunities in the sports betting industry.
While this is certainly an exciting development for sports betting enthusiasts in North Carolina, it is important to remember that gambling can be addictive and should be approached with caution. The state has implemented measures to promote responsible gambling, such as age restrictions and self-exclusion programs, to help prevent problem gambling.
Overall, the awarding of the first licenses for sports betting in North Carolina represents a major milestone for the state and its residents. With reputable operators like DraftKings and FanDuel now on board, sports betting enthusiasts can look forward to a safe and enjoyable betting experience in the Tar Heel State.
