The game total is sitting at 146.5 with the under slightly favored at -115. ISU is 10-11 over/under this season, while Kansas has been one of the best under bets in the entire country, going just 5-16 O/U through its first 21 games.
The main reason for Kansas’ under streak is twofold. The Jayhawks are playing at a slower pace than last season (95th in tempo vs 88th) and they have a better defense (5th in efficiency vs 11th).
One KU game that stayed under by a wide margin was their first matchup with Iowa State just two weeks ago, which resulted in a 74-57 rout in the Cyclones’ favor in Ames. The teams combined for just 131 total points against a total of 143.5.
After that win, the Cyclones were 15-1 and had a legitimate argument to be the #1 team in the nation. But the proverbial wheels have started coming off the bus ever since.
In their next game, they fell 64-57 at West Virginia (#43 at KenPom). After wins over #58 UCF (108-83 home) and #57 Arizona St (76-61 away), ISU suffered its first back-to-back losses of the season, falling 86-75 at #12 Arizona and, in one of the most stunning results of the season to date, 80-61 at home to #68 Kansas State.
The Cyclones were 14.5-point home-court favorites over the Wildcats. They are still among the favorites in the 2025 March Madness odds but have faded to +1200 during their recent rough patch.
The Jayhawks also lost their last game, falling 80-71 at #25 Baylor on Saturday. Both teams have had just one day of rest heading into Monday’s game in Lawrence.

Hunter Dickinson (16.4 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 2.2 APG) and Curtis Jones (17.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 2.3 APG) both have point totals of 17.5, with Zeke Mayo (15.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.0 APG) next at 15.5. Dickinson also leads the rebound totals at 8.5 with ISU’s Joshua Jefferson (12.9 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 2.8 APG) one behind at 7.5.
KU point guard Dejuan Harris Jr (9.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 5.9 APG) has the highest assist total by a wide margin at 6.5. No one else is over 3.5.
Iowa State vs Kansas Prediction
The first matchup between the teams was a rout. Iowa State had opened a double-digit lead by halftime and it was never lower than that in the final eight minutes. It should be concerning to Kansas fans that ISU didn’t even shoot particularly well in that game; they managed to hit 8-of-13 from three but only shot 40.7% (24-of-59) from the floor. The Cyclones dominated the glass (43 to 33) and generated 11 steals with their high-intensity defense.
I expect the Jayhawks to do a better job of handling the pressure on their home court, but I still don’t like the matchup for Bill Self’s team.
Dickinson is having another solid season, but he hasn’t played well against elite defenses. He was held to just six points in the first meeting between these teams in Ames (3-of-10 shooting), scored 17 including OT in KU’s 92-86 home loss to Houston, and put up just 11 in a 75-72 win over Duke.
Those are the only top-three defenses KU has faced this season in terms of defensive efficiency. The next-best defense the Jayhawks have seen was 15th-rated Cincinnati, which held Dickinson to just 14 points on 7-of-16 from the floor. Dickinson, who started the season among the favorites in the Wooden Award odds, is now an afterthought in that betting market.
Expect Dickinson to have a quieter-than-average game.
