Illinois Underdogs to Iowa State Despite Lopsided Victories
In the bottom half of the East Region, #3 Illinois takes on #2 Iowa State. Illinois is a strong contender for the mantle of team-of-the-tournament so far. The Illini are 2-0 ATS in lopsided wins over #14 Morehead State (85-69 as 10.5-point favorites) and #10 Duquesne (89-63 also as 10.5-point favorites).
The third-leading scorer in the nation, Terrence Shannon Jr (23.3 PPG) dropped 26 against Morehead State and 30 against the Dukes.
But Brad Underwood’s high-scoring team now has to face the second-best defense in the nation in the form of Iowa State.
After blowing out #15 South Dakota State (82-65) in round one, the Cyclones distanced #7 Washington State in the second half en route to a 67-56 victory.
Iowa State has held ten straight opponents to 65 points or fewer and averages just 61.3 points against, fourth-best in the country while playing at the 202nd-fastest tempo.
Illinois has scored 70 or more in 20 straight games and averages 84.6 PPG (ninth-most) while playing at the 70th-fastest tempo.
The East Region Final Four takes place at TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts.
Tennessee Slight Favorites Over Creighton
Two teams that survived close calls on Saturday night meet in the Midwest Region when the #3 Creighton Bluejays take on the #2 Tennessee Volunteers at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
After blowing out #14 Akron in the first round (77-60), Creighton needed double-overtime to finally put away the #11 Oregon Ducks in round two (86-73).
The six-day break will be much needed for the top-heavy Bluejays. Ryan Kalkbrenner, Trey Alexander, and Baylor Scheierman – the team’s three leading scorers both this year and last – all played at least 49 of the 50 available minutes in Saturday’s double-OT thriller over the Ducks. Each member of that trio played at least 38 minutes in the opening-round win over Akron, as well. And all three have scored at least 15 points in both games to date.
Tennessee’s win over Texas in the second round looked like it was going to be more comfortable. The Volunteers led by 12 with 13 minutes to play and were still up seven with just over two minutes remaining. But the Longhorns trimmed the lead to just one in the final minute (56-55) before Tennessee sealed the 62-58 victory with clutch free throws.
In the first round, Tennessee overwhelmed #15 Saint Peter’s, leading 46-20 at halftime and runnin away with an 83-49 win.
The Sweet 16 round of the NCAA basketball tournament is always an exciting time for fans and bettors alike. With just eight games on the schedule, each matchup becomes even more crucial as teams vie for a spot in the Elite Eight. In this article, we will break down the spread, moneyline, and total for all eight Sweet 16 games to help you make informed betting decisions.
First, let’s take a look at the spread for each game. The spread is the number of points that the favorite is expected to win by, and it is set by oddsmakers to create a balanced betting market. In the Sweet 16, there are often close matchups between evenly matched teams, so the spreads can be tight. For example, in a game between two top-seeded teams, the spread might be just a few points.
Next, let’s consider the moneyline for each game. The moneyline is a bet on which team will win the game outright, regardless of the final score. The odds for the moneyline can vary depending on the strength of each team and the perceived likelihood of an upset. In the Sweet 16, there are often underdogs that have made surprising runs to this point in the tournament, so the moneyline odds can be enticing for bettors looking to cash in on an upset.
Finally, let’s look at the total for each game. The total is the combined number of points scored by both teams in a game, and bettors can wager on whether the final score will be over or under that number. In the Sweet 16, there are often high-scoring games as teams battle it out for a spot in the next round. However, there can also be defensive battles between two evenly matched teams that keep the score low.
In conclusion, analyzing the spread, moneyline, and total for all eight Sweet 16 games can help bettors make informed decisions when placing their bets. By considering factors such as team strength, recent performance, and matchup history, bettors can increase their chances of success in this exciting round of the NCAA tournament. Good luck and happy betting!
