Argentina Survive Ecuador

For the first time in eight games, Argentina weren’t able to pick up the full three points in the first 90 minutes when they squared off with Ecuador on Thursday. After Lisandro Martinez finished off a superb corner play to give Argentina a 1-0 lead late in the first half, Ecuador’s Kevin Rodriguez stunned the Argentine faithful with an equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time.

But Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez got the better of Ecuador’s Alexander Dominguez in the shootout, stopping two penalties in a 4-3 Argentina victory.

Lautaro Martinez still leads the tournament in scoring with four goals in the group stage (despite coming on as a substitute in the first two). Lionel Messi has yet to score, though did assist on Martinez’s first goal of the tournament in the 2-0 win over Canada.

Canada’s Dream Run Continues

Despite scoring just one goal in the group stage, Canada was able to advance with a 1-1-1 record. After falling to Argentina, they snuck past Peru, 1-0, and then held Chile to a 0-0 draw.

Canada had the good fortune of playing the bulk of the Peru and Chile games against ten men, but they proved their progression wasn’t just luck in the quarterfinals against Group B-winner Venezuela: Canada was the more-dangerous team throughout the first half and took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a goal from Jacob Shaffelburg. That tally held up until the 65th minute when Salomón Rondón capitalized on errors from the Canadian backline and keeper Maxime Crépeau to level the score at 1-1. But Crépeau atoned for his mistake in the shootout as Canada won the skills competition 4-3.

Canada and Argentina have only met twice previously, including the 2-0 Argentina win on June 20th. The only other meeting was a 5-0 thrashing for La Albiceleste  at home in 2010.
