The New York Yankees (60-43, 27-22 home) continued their second-half slide last night with a 3-2 loss to the crosstown rival New York Mets (52-48, 26-22 away). On Wednesday night, the Pinstripes turn to reigning AL Cy Young-winner Gerrit Cole to try to stop the bleeding.

The Mets vs Yankees odds list the home team as sizable favorites on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx (7:10 pm ET).

The Yankees are -166 to even the series on Wednesday night and +130 on the runline to win by multiple runs. The Mets come back as +140 underdogs to win straight-up and -155 to keep the score within a run.

The run total is sitting at 8.5 with the over slightly favored at -112.

The Yankees managed a split with the Rays in their first series after the All-Star break but entered the hiatus going 8-17 in their last 25 games. That tailspin dropped New York behind Baltimore in the AL East standings, where the Yankees are currently 1.5 games in arrears.

The MLB division odds list New York as the +105 second-favorite in the AL East behind the Orioles.

The Mets, on the other hand, entered the break winning eight of ten and are now 3-2 since play resumed on Friday. They remain 11.5 games back of the league-leading Phillies in the NL East but have a half-game lead on the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Mets remain a +5000 longshot in the World Series odds,  tied for the 13th-best odds.

Sean Manaea vs Gerrit Cole

6-4 Record 3-1
3.73 ERA 4.60
4.34 xERA 4.02
1.24 WHIP 1.40
22.9% K% 26.6%

After an elbow injury kept him out until mid-June, Cole started the 2024 campaign on a relatively rough note, posting a 6.75 ERA through his first four starts and making it out of the fifth inning just once.

But his last two starts before the All-Star break were much more Cole-esque. The reigning Cy Young-winner allowed just two runs over 12.0 innings with more strikeouts (15) than hits and walks (11+2).

Manager Aaron Boone allowed Cole to go over 90 pitches in both starts for the first time in his abbreviated season. Both starts ended in Yankees victories: 4-1 over Baltimore on July 12 and 6-1 over Tampa on July 19.

Cole’s second start this season was against the Mets, and he was tagged for six earned runs on seven hits (four home runs) in just 4.0 innings during a 9-7 loss on June 25.

He still has excellent numbers against the Mets hitters, overall, though. In 149 total ABs, they are slashing just .201/.287/.436 against Cole.

Manaea had has an up-and-down season with, on the whole, more good than bad, but he was roughed up in his final start before the break, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.0 innings in a 6-4 loss at light-hitting Miami.

Prior, he had piled up 20 innings in his last three starts (at least 6.0 in each) allowing just four runs total on 12 hits and six walks with 20 Ks.

In his first start against the Yankees this year, Manaea pitched 5.0 shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks with three Ks in a 12-2 Mets victory.

Manaea’s career numbers against current Yankee hitters are not pretty, however. They have a .281 average and .853 OPS in 57 at-bats. Aaron Judge is 6-for-13 with two homers.

NY Mets vs NY Yankees Prediction for July 24

Cole’s last two starts before the All-Star break give me confidence we’re going to see the reigning AL Cy Young-winner on Wednesday, and not the rehabbing imposter who took his place in June.

His stamina is back and it’s showed on his fastball velocity, which was topping out at about 92 mph after the first inning when he was tagged for four homers the first time he faced the Mets this season.

NYM vs NYY picks:

  • Yankees moneyline (-166)
  • Mets under 1.5 runs first 5 Innings (-110)
