Can Aidan Hutchinson Win NFL Comeback Player of the Year?

Detroit Lions pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson is a heavy favorite in the NFL Comeback Player of the Year odds. In fact, he’s also the favorite to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Hutchinson roared out of the gate in 2024, leading the NFL with eight sacks through his first five games. Unfortunately, the former Michigan standout broke his tibia and fibia while tackling Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. The second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft led all edge defenders in PFF’s overall grade (94.9), and pass-rushing grade (95).

According to the latest reports from NFL insiders, Hutchinson will be back up to full speed in four to six months. Video footage of the Lions superstar has gone live, leaving credence to the theory Hutch will be ready to roll by training camp. If he can regain the form that led to his early season breakout, Hutchinson is a fantastic bet to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

NFL Comeback Player of the Year Prediction

Further down the odds board, young, ascending players make sense as NFL Comeback Player of the Year bets. Both Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and Minnesota Vikings signal-caller JJ McCarthy fit the bill.

The former first-overall selection, Lawrence enters his fifth year with a new head coach in Liam Coen. Coen will call the shots in Jacksonville, giving Lawrence the third coach of his NFL career. Under Coen’s leadership, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense finished in the top five in yards per game, scoring, passing yards and rushing yards per game last season. The Rhode Island native will aim to coax the best out of Lawrence after guiding Baker Mayfield to career highs in yards, passing touchdowns, and completion percentage in 2024. Lawrence has all the tools to develop into a top-tier player in the NFL, but will need to be more consistent to earn the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Having said that, Jacksonville lost 10 one-score games last season, so the Lawrence-Coen connection has the potential to quickly flip the script.

On the flip side, Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy will be a rookie in 2025. The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft tore his meniscus in training camp and missed his inaugural season. McCarthy will step into an offense in which former flop Sam Darnold tossed 35 touchdowns last season. In fact, Darnold put together a career year in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offense while throwing for over 4,300 yards and completing 66% of passes. Should McCarthy emulate those numbers while leading the Vikings back into the playoffs, he’ll be a surefire contender for the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Picks: Trevor Lawrence (+400), JJ McCarthy (+750)

After missing the entire 2020 NFL season due to a serious injury, quarterback Josh Hutchinson is now favored to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award for the upcoming season. Hutchinson, who suffered a torn ACL in the preseason last year, has been working tirelessly to rehab and get back to full strength for the 2021 season.

The 28-year-old signal-caller has shown impressive progress in his recovery, with reports indicating that he is ahead of schedule in his rehab and is looking sharp in offseason workouts. Hutchinson’s dedication to his recovery and his determination to come back stronger than ever have not gone unnoticed by fans and analysts alike.

In addition to his physical recovery, Hutchinson has also been working on improving his mental game during his time off. He has been studying film, working with coaches, and focusing on his decision-making and leadership skills in order to be better prepared for the challenges of the upcoming season.

With the support of his teammates, coaches, and fans, Hutchinson is poised to make a triumphant return to the field this season. If he can stay healthy and perform at a high level, there is no doubt that he will be a top contender for the Comeback Player of the Year award.

While there are other players who will also be in contention for the award, including some high-profile veterans who are coming back from injuries or subpar seasons, Hutchinson’s story of perseverance and determination makes him a strong favorite to take home the honor. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how he performs in the upcoming season and whether he can live up to the high expectations that have been set for him.
