Americans love their football, and the American Gaming Association does not see that changing for the Super Bowl this year.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) is estimating that U.S. customers will wager more than $1.39 billion on Super Bowl LIX between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.

If the estimate is accurate, it will be a record setting betting performance and the most wagered by Americans on a Super Bowl.

The enthusiasm for the Super Bowl and sports betting market is an indicator of the health of the U.S. markets overall.

“No single event unites sports fans like the Super Bowl, and that excitement extends to sports betting, with this year’s record legal handle reflecting its widespread appeal,” Bill Miller, AGA president and CEO, said in a release. “This figure underscores the positive impact of the legal market—from protecting consumers to generating tax revenue that benefits communities across the country—while enhancing the game experience for all.”

Currently, 38 states and Washington, D.C. have some form of legalized sports betting. According to an AGA poll, 75% of Americans support legal sports wagering in their home state, and 90% view sports betting as an acceptable form of entertainment.

The Super Bowl marks the end of an NFL season that has seen an accelerated interest in sports betting. The AGA estimated prior to the start of the season that that American adults would bet more than $35 billion at legal sportsbooks.

The AGA’s NFL 2024 wagering estimates are based on date from states that break out the handle and revenue totals between college and professional football, according to the organization.

Final season numbers will be shared after the Super Bowl.

Increased Sports Betting Accounts for NFL Season

GeoComply, a geolocation services company, announced today that legal U.S. sports betting accounts increased during the previous season.

According to GeoComply data, during the 2024-2025 NFL season, active sports betting accounts increased by 20.2% compared with last season.

“The expansion of regulated betting markets is bringing more fans into the legal ecosystem,” a GeoComply representative noted in the release.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has released its annual Super Bowl betting forecast, predicting historic numbers for this year’s big game. With the rise of legal sports betting across the country, the AGA expects that Americans will wager a record-breaking $7.6 billion on Super Bowl LVI.

This staggering figure represents a 36% increase from last year’s betting total of $5.6 billion. The AGA attributes this growth to the continued expansion of sports betting in states across the country, as well as the increasing popularity of online and mobile betting platforms.

According to the AGA’s forecast, approximately 31.5 million Americans will place bets on the Super Bowl this year, either through legal sportsbooks, online platforms, or with friends and family in informal pools. This represents a significant increase from the 23.2 million Americans who bet on the game last year.

The AGA also predicts that a majority of Super Bowl bets will be placed online or through mobile apps, with 59% of bettors expected to use these platforms. This shift towards digital betting is reflective of broader trends in the gambling industry, as more and more states legalize online sports betting and players increasingly prefer the convenience of betting from their smartphones or computers.

In addition to traditional bets on the outcome of the game, the AGA expects that prop bets will play a significant role in this year’s Super Bowl betting frenzy. Prop bets, which allow bettors to wager on specific events or occurrences during the game, have become increasingly popular in recent years and are expected to account for a significant portion of total wagers.

Overall, the AGA’s forecast paints a picture of a Super Bowl betting landscape that is larger and more diverse than ever before. With millions of Americans expected to wager billions of dollars on the game, this year’s Super Bowl promises to be not only a thrilling sporting event but also a major gambling spectacle.
