Timberwolves vs Mavericks Prediction
- Under 216.5 (-110)
The Mavs recent struggles can be attributed to the loss of superstar Luka Doncic. The perennial NBA MVP odds candidate has been out since Christmas Day, when he suffered a calf strain against these same Timberwolves. Dallas has been in a tailspin ever since, posting a 4-10 record. They’ve lost to bottom feeders New Orleans and Charlotte during that stretch, and rank 25th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 21st in Net rating over their last 10 outings.
The injury situation is looking even more dire tonight. Starting center Dereck Lively has already been ruled out, as has backup point guard Jaden Hardy. Starting small forward Klay Thompson is questionable, while his direct backup Naji Marshall is a game-time decision, as is backup shooting guard Quentin Grimes.
Minnesota meanwhile, is in much better shape, but they won’t be operating at 100%. Donte DiVincenzo is out indefinitely due to a toe injury. He had just recently been promoted to the starting lineup, after posting 27 and 28 point outings. His offense will be missed, as that area has been the biggest leak so far for Minny. The Timberwolves rank 22nd in scoring, and 26th in turnovers. They’ve been the third best three point shooting team, but have been getting nothing off the break or down low.
Minnesota is bottom-10 in both points in the paint and off the break. They’re 24th in assists, and bottom-eight in trips to the line. Fortunately for the Timberwolves, they’re an excellent defensive team. They rank fifth in points allowed and seventh in defensive rating. Six of their past nine opponents have failed to reach 110 points, and Dallas will be hard pressed to do so as well with their injury woes.
That brings the under into play, which has been a profitable trend in Mavs games. Dallas contests have failed to clear the total in back-to-back outings, and in 10 of the 14 games Doncic has missed.
Timberwolves vs Mavericks Player Props
- Kyrie Irving Under 4.5 Assists (+114)
Switching over to the NBA props market now, where we’re looking to bet the under on Kyrie Irving’s assist prop. The line currently sits at 4.5, a number he’s crossed only twice in his last eight games. With Doncic out, Irving has been forced to shoulder a much heavier scoring load. He’s been productive with multiple 30+ efforts, but his play making has taken a back seat.
Irving has put up shot totals of 21 or more five of his last nine outings. It’s no coincidence that those games coincided with low assist numbers, and in what projects to be a tight scoring game tonight, we should expect a ton of shots for Kyrie. Also working against him for this prop is the Minny defense. They’ve been excellent at limiting opponent assists this season, ranking fourth in that category.
