A massive game in the National League playoff race is on tap for Sunday Night Baseball tonight as the Los Angeles Dodgers (87-61, 39-34 away) visit the Atlanta Braves (81-67, 42-31 home) at Truist Park at 7:10 pm ET.

The Braves dominated the first two games of the series (6-2, 10-1) and have clawed back into a tie with the Mets for the final NL Wild Card. LAD’s two-game losing streak has trimmed its lead over the Padres to just 3.5 games in the NL West.

With Walker Buehler on the mound for Los Angeles against Atlanta’s Charlie Morton, the Dodgers vs Braves odds for Sunday Night Baseball slightly favor Atlanta completing a rare sweep of LA.

The Dodgers (+340) remain the outright favorites in the 2024 World Series odds. Atlanta’s odds have faded to +2200 as they fight tooth and nail just to make the postseason. Both the Braves and Mets are one game back of Arizona for the second NL Wild Card and 1.5 behind San Diego, which holds the first Wild Card slot. They are six games clear of the Cubs.

Walker Buehler vs Charlie Morton

1-5 Record 8-8
5.95 ERA 4.11
5.19 xERA 4.51
1.64 WHIP 1.32
17.9% K% 24.5%

Coming back from his second Tommy John surver, Walker Buehler’s 2024 has been nothing short of a disaster. The 30-year-old is 1-5 with an ugly 5.95 ERA in 59.0 innings. He was reasonably good in May and early June (4.64 ERA in his first seven starts) but has witnessed his earned-run average balloon by over a run in his last six starts.

Nothing improved last time out when he allowed five runs on nine hits of 5.0 innings in a 10-4 loss to the Cubs.

He has decent career numbers against the current Atlanta hitters (.246 average, .705 OPS in 65 total at-bats) but hasn’t faced the Braves this year.

On the other side, 40-year-old Charlie Morton hasn’t been great, but has been considerably better than Buehler, with a 4.11 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. His last outing was one of his best of the season, throwing 6.2 innings of six-hit, one-run ball with seven strikeouts. But it was in a losing effort as his teammates failed to score a run in a 1-0 shutout loss.

That was Morton’s sixth straight start of at least 5.0 innings without allowing more than three runs.

His only start against the Dodgers this season was rock-solid, giving up two runs on five hits over 6.0 innings in a 4-3 extra-innings loss for Atlanta.

Dodgers vs Braves Predictions & Picks

While Morton is having a sub-par year in terms of his legendary career (4.01 career ERA), he represents a much more reliable option on Sunday night, given his LA counterpart. Buehler still has most of his velocity (95.2 average fastball velo) but his control has abandoned him. He’s averaging 3.20 walks per nine innings, up from 2.53 in his last season in 2022, while his Ks/9 have decreased from a career-high of 10.61 in 2019 all the way to 7.47 this year, his lowest ever.

Atlanta is still missing potent bats from its lineup, including Austin Riley and Ozzie Albies, but the healthy hitters are finally starting to wake up, mashing 16 runs in the last 18 innings.

Look for Atlanta’s hot streak to continue against a very vulnerable starter searching for answers.

LAD vs ATL picks:

  • Braves moneyline (-106) at FanDuel
  • Buehler under 15.5 outs recorded (-170) at DraftKings
