  • The Open Championship tees off at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland on Thursday morning.
  • The field is loaded with the top golfers from around the world, including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and 2023 winner Brian Harman.
  • Keep reading below for our top picks for this week’s big tournament in Scotland.

The Open Championship begins on Thursday at Royal Troon in Scotland. It’ll be the last major of the 2024 PGA season, and the field is loaded, as you’d expect. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and the world’s top golfers will compete starting Thursday morning. The Open Championship is the major where Scheffler has fared the worst in his career. His best finish was a tie for 8th place back in 2021. USA Network will have coverage of the tournament all 4 days, with NBC adding coverage on Saturday and Sunday for the final 2 rounds.

The Open Championship Picks

  • Sahith Theegala top-10 finish (+400)
  • Jordan Spieth to miss the cut (+162)

Theegala just finished tied for 4th at the Genesis Scottish Open. He carded scores of 66, 65, 66 and 69, struggling a bit on Sunday but still coming in under par to finish at -14. He has 6 top-10 finishes this year already and is playing some great golf over in Scotland. I think he has what it takes to finish at least 10th this week at Royal Troon.

Spieth, on the other hand, is very much not playing good golf right now. He’s having an awful year and I think that’ll continue this week. He missed the cut at the Scottish Open last week and has missed the cut 6 times total in 2024. With +162 odds over at bet365 to only make it through 2 rounds this week, I like the value to pick against Spieth. Hopefully his game improves in 2025, but I’m fading him for the rest of 2024.

The Open Championship Longshot Bets

  • Sahith Theegala to win (+4000)
  • Ludvig Åberg Round 1 leader (+2500)

I already explained above why I like Theegala to finish in the top 10. I’m going to be placing a smaller bet on him to win the whole thing this week at Royal Troon, too. He has the talent and is sure to be in the mix throughout the weekend.

Theegala hasn’t had much success in The Open yet, with his best finish being tied for 34th in 2022. But he’s a different golfer than he was back then and Royal Troon is different than the other Open courses he’s played.

Putting a unit on Theegala to finish top 10 and half a unit on him to win is the play I’m going with this week.

I expect that if Theegala is going to win, he’ll face a challenge from Ludvig Åberg. The rising star from Sweden was right there with Theegala at the Scottish Open as they both finished tied for 4th. I expect them to see a lot of each other this week, maybe even playing in the same group as they gun for their first major titles on Saturday and Sunday.

Åberg often does his best work out of the gates. In 4 of his last 6 tournaments, his Round 1 score was his best of the week. I think that continues at Royal Troon and Åberg will snag the lead on Thursday. Then it’ll be up to Theegala and others to chase him down starting Friday. Betting on Åberg to have the Round 1 lead at +2500 on bet365 is a good value.
