Texas A&M (49-13) and Florida (34-28) wrap up the opening round of the College World Series Saturday night at 7 pm ET. The winner of this SEC battle will face the winner of Game 3 between NC State and Kentucky.

The #4 overall seed Aggies got here by sweeping their regional and super regional, and they won comfortably in every game except against Texas, where they went to extra innings. Florida’s path here was a little different.

The Gators snuck into the NCAA Tournament as a 3 seed in the Stillwater regional. After beating Nebraska in their first regional matchup, Florida lost 7-1 to host Oklahoma State. They had to battle back from the loser’s bracket and forced a Game 3 against Oklahoma State where they won 4-2. Florida then swept Clemson on the road in super regionals. The Gators are hoping to do their best impression of 2022 Ole Miss, where they sneak into the NCAA Tournament, reach the College World Series, and win the National Championship.

Texas A&M vs Florida Starting Pitchers

It seemed like Texas A&M was going to have their ace Ryan Prager on the mound in their opener against Florida, but that is not the case. . It was a tale of two starts for Prager in the NCAA Tournament. He looked lights-out in his regionals start vs Texas. Prager went 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and allowed two runs. Then in the super regionals against Oregon, he only lasted 1.2 innings and allowed 6 earned runs. What may have impacted this decision was how Prager did when he faced this Florida team earlier this season. He got the loss as he pitched 2.1 innings and gave up six runs to the Gators. Injuries to the Aggies’ pitching staff could have also influenced this move. Instead, they are opting for LHP Justin Lamkin

Lamkin is fresh as he has only made one start in the NCAA Tournament, but it did not go well. He pitched 0.1 innings and gave up 2 runs in relief against Louisiana. Lamkin pitched 4.2 innings against Florida during the regular season and earned the loss despite pitching well. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five.

Freshman Liam Peterson will take the mound for Florida on Saturday. Peterson struck out seven over 5.1 innings of work against Nebraska in Florida’s win during regionals, then like Prager, struggled in the super regionals. He gave up 3 runs and only lasted one inning before getting pulled against Clemson. Against Texas A&M earlier this season, Peterson allowed six runs through two innings and earned the loss.

Justin Lamkin vs Liam Peterson

2-2 Record 3-4
5.73 ERA 5.97
1.345 WHIP 1.591
55 IP 60.1
11.6 K/9 10.7

Texas A&M vs Florida Predictions

These teams are heading in two opposite directions. Florida is getting hot at the right time and have won seven of their last nine games, while Texas A&M is battling injuries. Outfield Braden Montgomery will be inactive in this game and LHP Shane Sdao is still recovering from his injury suffered against Oregon. Still, the Aggies have been able to win five in a row.

While Florida’s record was just above .500, their success should not be a total surprise. They are led by one of the best players in college baseball, Jac Caglianone, and return many others from last year’s #2 overall seed team that reached Omaha. They had some growing pains with their pitching staff and struggled during SEC play, but they have seemed to figure things out just in time for the postseason. Florida’s pitching staff looks like a completely different unit than they did earlier this season.

The Gators have seen success against Texas A&M already this year and have the experience of playing in Omaha. I am buying into the run this Florida team is on and believe they will keep this game within a run.
