  • The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies meet again in London on Sunday morning
  • In a weak starting pitching matchup, Jose Quintana starts for the Mets opposite Taijuan Walker for the Phillies
  • Below, see the Mets vs Phillies odds, predictions, and picks for Sunday, June 9

The MLB’s London Series finishes up on Sunday morning with the New York Mets (27-36) and Philadelphia Phillies (45-19) closing out their two-game set at London Stadium at 10:05 am ET. The Phillies took the first game of the series on Saturday morning by a 7-2 score, using a huge six-run fourth inning to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.

Neither team is apt to feel confident in their starter on Sunday with Jose Quintana toeing the rubber for New York and Taijuan Walker getting the nod for the Phillies. Philly is a modest -142 favorite in the finale of the quick two-game series.

New York Mets vs Philadelphia Phillies Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
New York Mets (Quintana) +120 +1.5 (-155) O 10.5 (-120)
Philadelphia Phillies (Walker) -142 -1.5 (+130) U 10.5 (-100)

The Mets come back as +120 underdogs and -155 on the runline to keep the score within a single run. The over/under is sitting at an inflated 10.5. The makeshift park at London Stadium is expected to be a hitter’s park. The teams combined for 21 hits on Saturday, despite only putting up nine runs (67% of which came in a single inning).

The Phillies currently have the best record in the MLB, half a game up on the New York Yankees, but they’re only the third-favorite in the World Series odds at +588, behind both the Yankees and outright favorite LA Dodgers.

The Mets, who are four back of a Wild Card berth and a shocking 17.5 games behind the Phillies in the NL East, have the eighth-worst World Series odds in the league at +13750.

Jose Quintana vs Taijuan Walker

0-1 Record 3-1
5.17 ERA 5.73
5.23 xERA 6.14
1.39 WHIP 1.59
5.17% K% 18.0%

Both Quintana and Walker are having dreadful seasons. Walker has somehow managed a 3-1 win/loss record despite an ugly 5.73 ERA and even uglier 6.14 xERA. He’s benefited from exceptional run support from the Philly hitters. The Phillies have averaged 6.42 runs per game in Walker’s seven starts this season.

Walker already faced the Mets once this season, lasting just 3.1 innings while giving up two run on four hits and two walks with only one strikeout in a 6-5 extra-innings Mets victory on May 16.

Overall, though, his numbers against this Mets lineup are solid.  In 112 total at-bats, New York hitters are slashing .223/.293/.357 off Walker with just three homers (one each from Pete Alonso, JD Martinez, and Brandon Nimmo). Martinez has by far the best numbers off Walker, going 7-for-15 (.467) with three RBI.

Quintana was the Mets starter in the 6-5 extra-innings win back in mid-May. He lasted 5.1 innings against Philly on that occasion, surrendering two runs on four hits in one of his best starts of the season. But that was the only one of Quintana’s last five starts that resulted in a Mets win, and his ERA has ballooned from 3.48 at the end of April to 5.17 heading into Sunday.

Like Walker, there is a ton of history between Quintana and the lineup he’ll be facing in London, and it’s actually bodes well for the pitcher. New York’s current lineup has just a .233 average and .633 OPS in 163 at-bats against the soft-throwing lefty. Bryce Harper is just 3-for-17 (.167) with one home run and a concerning six Ks.

New York Mets vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction

I have very little interest in backing either of these starters, especially in the London Stadium bandbox. Their relatively solid history against the hitters they’ll be facing on Sunday gives me little confidence. Both have showed a marked and prolonged decline this season compared to their peaks.

Over bettors on Saturday will rightfully feel aggrieved that the teams only combined for nine runs. There was a ton of traffic on the basepaths all day. I feel confident that run prevention will be at a premium in the second and final game of the London Series, and I’m going to bet a big first-half total of over 6.5 at plus money.

NYM vs PHI picks: first 5 innings over 6.5 runs (+114)
