Norwegian Casper Ruud will try to claim his first singles title in 2025 when he faces off with Englishman Jack Draper in the Madrid Open Final. It’s been a good start to the season for Draper, who ranks fifth in this tournament — he’ll be looking for his second title of the year, and is the fitting betting favorite.

Ruud and Draper clash on the clay at Park Manzanares in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday, with the start time yet to be determined.

Path to the Final

It’s been a clean run to the finale for both men, with someone set to lose a set for the first time all tournament in the first set.

It’s been a rougher road for Ruud, though, as he injured his hip in the semifinal against Francisco Cerundolo.

It didn’t stop Ruud from taking the match in straight sets, and the three-time Grand Slam runner-up was not visibly in pain during the match. The scheduling gods have gone an extra step by giving him a valuable day off between matches to get right.

The rest of his path included dispatching Arthur Rinderknech, in Round 2, Sebastian Korda in Round 3, Taylor Fritz in the fourth, and Daniil Medvedev in the quarters.

As for Draper, he’s breezed through Tallon Griekspoor, won just a set against Matteo Berrettini before he retired, then dispatched Tommy Paul in Round 4.

He dusted Matteo Arnaldi 6-0-6-4 before topping Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals, needing a tie break in the second set to advance.

Draper is just two tournaments removed from taking the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells at the start of March, but he’s failed to even reach Round 4 at both the Miami Open and Monte-Carlo Masters before finding his form again in Madrid.

Ruud vs Draper Prediction

If Ruud is not hampered by his hip, he should be in great position to capture his first Masters 1000 title.

The Norwegian is built for the clay courts, as evidenced by 11 of his 12 career titles coming on that surface, as well as finishing as a runner-up at the French Open on two different occasions.

If Draper’s approach in the semis against Musetti is any indication, Ruud better have his backhand fined tuned. Draper pounded Musetti’s backhand with his left-handed forehand all through the semi-final to great success.

Still, the Englishman is only starting to dabble on the clay with some success, and while he has broken through with a chance to win a title — he’s now just the third man born in the 2000s to have made the final of a Masters 1000 event in both clay and hard courts — Ruud should have enough rest and energy to pick up title no. 1 this season.
