Sometimes, sports give us exactly what we want. I can’t think of a better final pairing at the Masters than Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau with the Green Jacket on the line. McIlroy can become just the sixth player to complete the Grand Slam with a win on Sunday, while DeChambeau will be looking to steal another Major away from McIlroy, just like he did at last year’s U.S. Open.

The Masters Odds Entering Sunday

Oddsmakers believe Sunday will be a two-horse race, as do the historical trends. McIlroy is a -200 favorite to capture the elusive Green Jacket, while DeChambeau is next on the odds board at +250. No other player is within three shots of the lead, and each of the past eight Masters champions have come from the final group.

McIlroy 18 Holes Away from History

With the way he’s playing, Rory should be up by a touchdown at this point. He’s fired back-to-back six-under 66’s at Augusta, overcoming a late meltdown in Round 1. McIlroy had it to 4-under chipping for eagle on the par-5 15th on Thursday, but two double-bogeys later left him at even par.

He initiated God mode through Amen Corner on Friday, playing 10, 12, and 13 in 4-under par. Rory activated that mode again on Saturday, getting off to a birdie, eagle, birdie start. After a hiccup on 8 and 10, he closed his third round with a birdie on 13 and another eagle on 15. He fired the low round of the day for the second consecutive round, and with the amount of quality looks he gave himself, he could have easily scared the course record.

Now, he’s 18 holes away from history, with one of the most popular players in the sport standing in his way. DeChambeau book ended his round with electric birdies on 1 and 18, dropping a 45+ foot putt on each green. He’s searching for his third career Major, but neither he nor Rory is a bet for me on Sunday, given their price.

Neither is Scottie Scheffler, who looked as ordinary as he has in years on Saturday, grinding out an even-par round. Shane Lowry threatened the lead at one point, before melting down on the Augusta National greens. Justin Rose’s Masters dream died when he three-putted from 4 feet on 16, while Corey Conners isn’t enough of a scorer to erase such a large deficit.

The Masters Picks and Predictions for Final Round

  1. Ludvig Aberg +3500: Four times in Masters history has someone overcome a six-shot Final Round deficit. It hasn’t happened since Nick Faldo in 1996, but Ludvig Aberg has the game to potentially complete the task. I wish we were getting better odds than 35-1, but that could just be the books protecting themselves. Aberg closed Saturday with three birdies in his final five holes, and missed a very makeable putt on 18 that would have put him in solo 4th. He’s an elite driver and putter, two necessary skills to win at Augusta, and just won at Torrey Pines in February, another Major Championship venue.
  2. Patrick Reed +8000: Also six strokes back is 2018 champ Patrick Reed. I tipped him after Round 1 as a great top-10 bet, and I don’t hate chasing an outright wager at this number. Reed is one of the few players to break par in all three rounds, and knows this course like the back of his hand. He’s got a world-class short game, and has now shot under par seven times in his last 11 rounds at Augusta. It will take a special round of golf to don another Green Jacket, but he has shot 67 or better multiple times in his Masters career.
