DET vs BAL Projected Starting Pitchers

Detroit Tigers Game Baltimore Orioles
Tarik Skubal (18-4, 2.39 ERA, 0.92 WHIP) Game 1 Corbin Burnes (15-9, 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP)
Reese Olson (4-8, 3.53 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) Game 2 Zach Eflin (10-9, 3.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP)
Keider Montero (6-6, 4.81 ERA. 1.32 WHIP) Game 3 Dean Kremer (8-10, 4.10 ERA, 1.24 WHIP)

The starting pitchers for Game 1 aren’t really in question, barring some managerial mind games. The Tigers will turn to ace Tarik Skubal, who is a massive favorite in the 2024 AL Cy Young odds. The Orioles can cue up 2021 NL Cy Young-winner Corbin Burnes, who led Baltimore with 15 wins and a 2.92 ERA this season.

After that, the situation is a but murkier for both teams. Reese Olson and Zach Eflin are listed as the #2 starters on the Detroit and Baltimore depth charts, respectively. Eflin pitched 10.2 innings with a 3.38 ERA during the Phillies run to the 2022 NL Pennant.

In just his second big-league season, the 25-year-old Olsen will be tasting postseason action for the first time.

Sep. 21 Detroit Orioles (4-2)
Sep. 20 Detroit Tigers (4-2)

Sep. 14 Baltimore Tigers (6-4)
Sep. 13 Baltimore Tigers (4-3)

The O’s and Tigers played all six of their head-to-head regular-season matchups in the month of September, when Detroit was red-hot. The Tigers wound up taking four of six from the Orioles, going 2-1 both at home and on the road.

The O’s somehow managed to dodge Detroit ace Skubal in both series.

Baltimore ace Corbin Burnes was responsible for both of his team’s wins against the Tigers this year. He went’ seven shutout innings in a 4-2 win on Sep. 14, and then another seven shutout innings in a 7-1 victory on Sep. 20. He struck out 15 Tigers in total while allowing just five hits and four walks.

Tigers vs Orioles Wild Card Series Prediction

With home-field advantage, the O’s are understandable favorites. But the discrepancy in the odds is bigger than justified. The Orioles were swept by the Rangers in the ALDS last year and haven’t won a playoff game since 2014 (eight straight losses).

It certainly helps have Corbin Burnes to start Game 1 this time around. Kyle Bradish was their Game 1 starter against Texas last year. But I give Detroit the edge on the mound in Game 1 thanks to Skubal.

In a format as brief as the three-game Wild Card, momentum counts for a lot, and no team enters the postseason hotter than the Tigers, who went 15-4 to end the regular season, jumping the Twins and Royals in the AL Central in the process.

DET vs BAL Series Pick: Tigers to advance (+146)

The 2024 Wild Card Series is set to kick off with an exciting matchup between the Detroit Tigers and the Baltimore Orioles. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs throughout the season, but now they have a chance to prove themselves in this do-or-die game.

The odds for this game are fairly even, with both teams having similar records and strengths. The Tigers have a strong lineup led by sluggers like Miguel Cabrera and Spencer Torkelson, while the Orioles have a solid pitching staff anchored by ace John Means.

In terms of predictions, it’s tough to say which team will come out on top. The Tigers have been playing well down the stretch, but the Orioles have shown they can compete with anyone on any given day. It could come down to which team executes better on the day of the game.

As for picks, it’s always a gamble when it comes to playoff baseball. However, if I had to choose, I would give a slight edge to the Tigers based on their experience and overall talent level. They have been in this situation before and know what it takes to win in the postseason.

Ultimately, this Wild Card Series matchup between the Tigers and Orioles is sure to be a thrilling one. Both teams will be giving it their all to advance to the next round, and fans can expect a hard-fought battle until the very end. Be sure to tune in and see which team comes out victorious in this high-stakes showdown.
