Fresh off a 140-106 destruction of the Bucks last night, the New York Knicks (26-14, 13-6 home, 20-19-1 ATS) are back in action on Monday, hosting the surging Detroit Pistons (20-19, 10-10 away, 20-17-2 ATS) at Madison Square Garden at 7:40 pm ET. Thought the Pistons have won six of seven and have an extra day of rest, the Knicks are listed as 7.5 or 8.0-point favorites in Monday’s NBA odds.

Don’t look now but the Pistons are a game over .500 and holding down the #8 seed in the Eastern Conference. Yes, the same Pistons team that finished an NBA-worst 14-68 last season. Cade Cunningham (24.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 9.5 APG), the oft-injured 2021 #1-overall pick, is fully healthy and has bloomed into an elite point guard in his fourth season as a pro.
The OK State product recorded his seventh triple-double of the season last time out, dropping 22 points, 10 rebounds, and a ludicrous 17 assists in a 123-114 home victory over Toronto.
Tim Hardaway Jr was electric from deep, scoring a game-high 27 points while shooting 7-of-8 from beyond the arc.
This is already the third meeting of the season between the Pistons and Knicks. New York cruised to an easy 128-98 win in Detroit back on November 1st, with Jalen Brunson (25.5 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 7.5 APG) scoring a game-high 36 points. But the Pistons answered back with a 120-111 at MSG on Dec. 7. Notably, Karl Anthony-Towns (25.4 PPG, 14.0 RPG, 3.3 APG) missed that game with knee tendinitis.
While New York’s win over the Bucks turned last night turned out lopsided, it was only a six-point game through three quarters, so head coach Tom Thibodeau wasn’t able to save his starters much playing time. Brunson had a game-high 44 points in 29 minutes while Towns added 30 points and a game-high 18 rebounds in a heavy 36-minute workload.
Given how well the Pistons have played of late – they’ve surged to 18th in the NBA in Net Rating at -1.0 over the last couple weeks – I’m not prepared to lay eight points with the Knicks at home. Detroit has been surprising on the road all season, going 12-7-1 against the number in away games, while New York is a game under .500 against the spread at home (10-11 ATS).
