Grand Canyon’s Takes Down Saint Mary’s With Big Defensive Effort

Back in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years, Bryce Drew’s Antelopes picked up their first March Madness victory since joining DI in the 2013-14 season with a decisive 75-66 win over #5 Saint Mary’s. GCU held the Gaels to just 45.2% (19-of-42) from two and 28% from three (7-of-25), while forcing Saint Mary’s into 13 turnovers.

Tyon Grant-Foster had a game-high 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. The 6’7 senior averaged 19.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game while winning WAC Player of the Year.

While GCU didn’t play a daunting schedule, they are now 2-0 against top-20 teams. The Lopes also beat San Diego State (79-73 home) on Dec. 5. They are one of just five teams with 30 wins this season. Their four losses came to South Carolina (75-68 in Glendale), Seattle (89-79 away), Tarleton State (77-74 away), and Abilene Christian (79-73 away).

Alabama Puts up 109 Against Charleston

Alabama’s potent offense was on full display on Friday night, dropping 51 points while taking a 17-point lead into halftime (51-34) and outdoing themselves with another 58 in the second half en route to a 109-96 win that wasn’t as close as even the 13-point final margin suggests.

Leading scorer Mark Sears (21.4 PPG, 4.1 APG, 4.0 RPG) had a game-high 30 points and has now scored at least 20 in seven straight.

Latrell Wrightsell added 17 while going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Tide shot 60% from the field (36-of-60) and 56% from three (13-of-23).

Defensively, the Tide were subpar (yet again), allowing 93 points and giving up 14 offensive rebounds on 38 opportunities. The Tide have now allowed 88 points or more in four straight.

Grand Canyon vs Alabama Prediction

I faded the Tide in the first round and am going to do so again. While their offense is as potent as any, they are playing with fire the way they defend. When their offense is just a little off-kilter, it leads to ugly losses. Of the Tide’s 11 setbacks this season, seven were by double-digits and five were by at least 14 points.

Grand Canyon showed on Friday – and also earlier in the season – it has the talent and coaching to beat top-tier teams, and they will come into Sunday’s matchup full of confidence.
