Will Celtics Run It Back in 2025?

Almost every significant contributor on the 2023-24 Celtics team is under contract for the 2024-25 season. The most-notable (potential) free agent is Sam Hauser (9.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 42.4 3P%), whom the C’s can pick up with a $2.1 million team option.

Boston’s only impending UFA’s are Luke Kornet (5.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG), Xavier Tillman (4.0 PPG, 2.7 RPG), and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (4.0 PPG, 1.2 RPG).

So if GM Brad Stevens is content with his squad that posted a league-best +11.7 Net Rating in the regular season (4.4 higher than any other team) and a league-best +8.0 Net Rating in the playoffs (1.6 higher than any other team), he can basically take the offseason off.

Are the Mavericks Poised for Another Deep Run?

West-champion Dallas is in a similar position. Their only notable impending UFA is Derrick Jones Jr (9.0, 3.6 RPG). But the Mavs weren’t exactly the juggernaut that the Celtics were at any point this season. They managed just the 15th-best Net Rating in the regular season (+2.1) and fifth-best in the playoffs (+3.6) despite winning 12 of their first 17 games in the postseason.

While Luka Doncic has an argument for best player in the league, his supporting cast scarcely looked like championship-caliber teammates.

In the West, OKC appears to be a team built to challenge for years to come. OKC had the second-youngest roster in the league this year, yet still earned the #1 seed in the West and posted the second-best Net Rating in the NBA behind Boston (+7.3).

Gordon Hayward (5.3 PPG, 2.5 RPG) is a UFA along with Bismack Biyombo and Mike Muscala, who combined to average just 2.9 PPG in only 26 games. OKC has a $2.1 million club option on Isiah Joe (8.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG) and a $2 million club option on Aaron Wiggins (6.9 PPG, 2.4 RPG).

The Boston Celtics are coming off a dominant championship run in the 2024 NBA season, and oddsmakers are already pegging them as the favorites to repeat as champions in 2025. With odds of +290, the Celtics are seen as the team to beat next season.

Led by superstar forward Jayson Tatum and a talented supporting cast, the Celtics proved themselves to be a formidable force in the league last season. Their combination of offensive firepower and defensive prowess made them a tough matchup for any team, and they ultimately cruised to a championship victory.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Celtics are expected to once again be a top contender in the Eastern Conference. With Tatum continuing to elevate his game and the team’s depth improving, they have all the pieces in place to make another title run.

Of course, the road to a championship won’t be easy. The NBA is filled with talented teams vying for the top spot, including perennial contenders like the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, and Golden State Warriors. These teams will be looking to dethrone the Celtics and claim the title for themselves.

But with their championship experience and proven track record of success, the Celtics are in a prime position to defend their title. If they can stay healthy and continue to play at a high level, there’s no reason why they can’t hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy once again in 2025.

As the offseason progresses and rosters take shape, it will be interesting to see how the odds for the 2025 NBA Championship shift. But for now, all eyes are on the Boston Celtics as they look to solidify their status as the team to beat in the upcoming season.
